English Half Marathon - help to make it bigger and better than last year

The 13.1 mile race will take place this year on Sunday 3 October and features a 'Half & Half' alternative, which splits the course in to a two-leg relay. There will be a corporate challenge and family friendly activities and junior races on the day as well.

marathonOrganisers Big-Q Events are hoping to attract in the region of 4000 runners to the second race with a view to growing this to 10,000 runners by 2012 when the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games take place in London.

The 2009 event attracted a strong elite field from the English and Scottish national squads, as well as thousands of local and charity runners from across the UK. The course, which starts and finishes at Victoria Park Stadium, traverses southbound on an undulating rural course through the villages of Warrington.

Mike James, race director from Big-Q Events, said: "We are really excited about returning to Warrington, our 2009 event received really strong feedback from the running community and we were absolutely overwhelmed by the support we received from residents and organisations in and around Warrington.

Over 50 people came together in typical British Weather, with a bit sunshine, wind and rain and the event's objectives met with that of Warrington Grassroots about building resilient communities that can effect change.

The Big Lunch's aim was to break down barriers in communities and improve communication within them: to get neighbours to know each other and start to work together to try to make a difference locally. The Big Lunch actively promotes local charities, just as Warrington Grassroots does. Warrington CVS encourage and facilitate local giving and directly support grassroots projects.

The Big Lunch invited all 61 million people across the UK to sit down and have lunch on Sunday 18 July as a simple act of community.
